(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Lieutenant Commander (MC) Carey M. Smith, United States Navy, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on December 8, 1941, aboard the U.S.N.H. CANACAO in the Philippine Islands. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.

Smith (NSN: 0-62174), United States Navy, was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as a Prisoner of War at Moji, Japan, and a hospital patient who had survived a ship sinking and subsequent sinking of a prison ship. He cared for his fellow prisoners 30 January to 26 February 1945.
