The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Theodore S. Speros (ASN: 6089251), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving with Battery D, 10th Field Artillery, displayed near Fort Lewis, Washington, on the night of 20 April 1933. While passing a bus en route from Tacoma to Fort Lewis, Washington, the automobile of Private First Class Leon Saffern, Battery A, 9th Field Artillery, was forced into the ditch, turned over, and immediately caught fire. Private Saffern was unable to extricate himself and was in danger of being burned to death. Sergeant Speros who was a passenger in the bus climbed down into the burning car and, disregarding the close proximity of the flames and the consequent danger of explosion of the gasoline tank, lifted Private Saffern out of the car to safety.
