The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Roy Johnson Smith (ASN: 0-128805), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Port Lyautey, French Morocco, on the night of 9 November 1942. With three privates, Second Lieutenant Smith crept up under cover of darkness to within thirty feet of a hostile position in the face of heavy fire of small arms and automatic weapons. He then shot two of the enemy with his sub-machine gun and destroyed the enemy position with hand grenades, allowing his unit to advance. Second Lieutenant Smith’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
