    Decorations U.S. Army 1862 – 1926, Supplement 3 (1940)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Julian S. Smith (ASN: 6374979), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with Company B, 8th Infantry, at Savannah Beach, Georgia, on 7 June 1938. While swimming in the ocean at Savannah Beach, near Fort Screven, Georgia, a 6-year-old boy, caught in a strong undertow and dragged into deep water off the beach, was about to drown. Private First Class Smith, without regard for his personal safety, plunged into the turbulent and dangerous waters, swam out to the boy and fighting the rough surf and undertow, kept him afloat until help arrived, by which time Private First Class Smith was so exhausted that he himself was in grave danger of drowning and had to be assisted to safety. The heroic conduct displayed by Private First Class Smith reflects great credit upon himself and the Army of which he is a member.
