    Decorations U.S. Army 1862 – 1926, Supplement 3 (1940)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Jack B. Smith (ASN: 6571820), United States Army Air Corps, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with Base Headquarters and 4th Air Base Squadron, GHQ Air Force, in rescuing a civilian from drowning during a flood at Riverside California, on the morning of 2 March 1938. On receiving a report that a civilian was marooned in a tree in the flooded area and in danger of drowning, Private Smith and two companions, with utter disregard of their personal safety, plunged into the deep, swift, debris-filled flood waters, and went to the aid of the imperiled man. Despite the swiftly moving current and the danger of being struck by timbers, uprooted trees, and other wreckage, Private Smith and his companions finally reached the exhausted man and removed him to safety, thereby saving his life. The heroism displayed by Private Smith on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
