The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Ernest C. Schneider, United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving with the Medical Detachment, 111th Infantry Regiment, Pennsylvania National Guard, displayed at the Regimental Infirmary, Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, 24 August, 1935. An explosion of a gasoline stove in the Regimental Infirmary enveloped the infirmary in flames, endangering the bedridden patients. Undaunted by the serious danger, Sergeant Schneider carried the flaming stove outside the infirmary and extinguished the flames, suffering painful burns to his hands. Disregarding his injuries, he returned to the infirmary and aided the patients before submitting to treatment for his burns.
