The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Amos Randall, Sr., United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 19 March 1969. Captain Randall distinguished himself while serving as an aerial observer in Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 321st Artillery, in the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. He observed 10 persons walking in a westerly direction crossing a stream bed, and after confirming that there were no friendly troops in the area, proceeded to call in and adjust artillery fire against the enemy position. During one low level pass, he was wounded by hostile ground fire, but he continued to adjust accurate artillery fire, resulting in the destruction of an ammunition storage point and the death of six enemy soldiers. Another low level pass was made and he marked the target with smoke, making positive surveillance of the complete neutralization of the enemy position. Captain Randall’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
