War Department, General Orders No. 6 (1930)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Master Sergeant Ira Partin (ASN: 6305413), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving on the Detached Enlisted Men’s List, as Instructor, Tennessee National Guard, on 21 April 1930 near Franklin, Tennessee. About noon on 21 April 1930 the automobile in which Sergeant Partin was ridding was passed by another car traveling at a high rate of speed. While trying to regain the center of the road, the speeding car skidded and turned over three or four times. Sergeant Partin jumped from his car and rushed to the scene where he found the car on its side with a broken gas line from which gasoline was pouring, and a young lady pinned beneath with the top of the car resting across her neck. Without regard for his own personal danger, although warned that an explosion was likely to occur at any moment, Sergeant Partin lifted the car unassisted, and held it until assistance arrived, thereby saving the life of the young lady.
