Newbold (ASN: 6711020), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving with Company C, 26th Infantry Regiment, while attempting to save a girl from drowning at Wilcox Barge Terminal, Plattsburg, New York on 30 June 1933. Observing an automobile containing a girl passenger fall from the dock into the waters of Lake Champlain, Private Newbold, being in full military uniform, with utter disregard of his own safety, dived into the water, swam to the car, and with the assistance of two other rescuers brought the girl safely to shore.
