The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Lucas M. Neas (ASN: 6384778), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with Company F, 22d Infantry, displayed on 8 August 1938, in rescuing an enlisted man from drowning in the waters of Red Creek, DeSoto National Forest, near Wiggins, Mississippi. On hearing cries for help from an enlisted man who had been thrown from his horse into deep water while fording Red Creek, another soldier who went to the rescue succeeded in bringing to the surface the drowning, struggling man who could not swim, but being almost exhausted by his exertions was forced momentarily to release his grasp on the helpless man. Private Neas who was some distance from the bank of the stream, realizing that the soldier would be unable to effect the rescue alone, with utter disregard of his own safety, without hesitation, and with great presence of mind went to his assistance jumped from the steep bank into the water, swam in the dangerous current to the drowning man, and with the help of the other soldier brought him safely to shore. The heroism displayed by Private Neas reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
