The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Malcolm E. Morrison (ASN: 6535237), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with 1st Signal Service Company, in rescuing a companion from drowning in the glacier-cooled waters of Taku Inlet near Juneau, Alaska, on 9 June 1938. When the small boat in which Private First Class Morrison and a civilian companion were traveling on a fishing trip capsized in the icy cold waters of Taku Inlet, throwing both men into the water, the civilian who could not swim was rendered unconscious. Although hampered by the heavy woolen clothing and rubber hip boots which he was wearing, and suffering from numbness induced by the cold water, Private First Class Morrison, with utter disregard of his own safety, grasped the drowning man by the hair and towing him in this way swam 75 yards to shore where he applied first aid measures and revived him thereby saving his life. Without food or means of making a fire, and thoroughly chilled by the cold wind blowing off Taku Glacier, a mile away, Private First Class Morrison cared for his weakened companion for 10 hours until they were picked up by a passing ship. The heroism and fortitude displayed by Private First Class Morrison on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
