The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Chief Yeoman Chester Arthur Guynup (NSN: 2121652), United States Navy, for gallantry in action while attached to a submarine detachment at Corregidor, Philippine Islands, in 1942. Chief Guynup risked his life on numerous occasions to carry out vital missions during the prolonged siege, and the subsequent evacuation of personnel. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese and subsequently died while in prison camp. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
