The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Thomas W. Meredith (ASN: 6811340), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving with Company A, 12th Infantry Regiment, in saving human life in Chesapeake Bay off the Fort Howard Military Reservation, Maryland on 15 August 1934. During a heavy thunderstorm a small sailing craft in which three persons were riding capsized in the rough water about 1,000 yards from shore, placing them in imminent danger of drowning. Private Meredith, noticing their predicament, plunged into the water, swam toward the capsized boat, and when he had nearly reached it met one of the party swimming to shore for help. Returning to shore, they secured a boat, made a return trip to the capsized craft, and rescued the other members of the party.
