Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 86 (November 25, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class John T. McKeon (ASN: 12023629), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy while serving with the Medical Detachment, 518th Military Police Battalion, on 11 October 1944, in Belgium. Following the bombing of a Belgian city, Private First Class McKeon proceeded immediately to the scene. Upon learning that three civilians were trapped in the ruins of a building, he, voluntarily and at the risk of his own life, entered the building amidst falling debris and brought the wounded persons to safety. He continued his search until he was satisfied that no other persons remained in the damaged building. By his courage and personal vigor, Private First Class McKeon reflected credit upon himself and the military service.
