    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Andrew J. McCauley (ASN: R-203461), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving on the Detached Enlisted Men’s List, assigned to First Recruit Company, Overseas Replacement Depot, Fort Slocum, New York, displayed while rescuing a woman from drowning in Long Island Sound, New York on 12 January 1934. When the United States Army harbor boat Colonel Barnett was leaving the dock at Fort Slocum, New York, a woman fell from the after deck of the steamer. Sergeant McCauley, a passenger on the steamer, with complete disregard of personal danger, jumped overboard into the cold, treacherous waters, and with great difficulty succeeded in reaching the woman and bringing her to a launch.
