The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Private Newton Luckie (ASN: 6120513), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with Detachment Quartermaster Corps and Ferry Detachment, in sacrificing his life to save a civilian from being crushed to death beneath a subway train at Brooklyn, New York, at about 1:00 a.m. 17 March 1939. On seeing an express train bearing down on a confused man trying to cross the railroad tracks between the two platforms of a subway station, Private Luckie, with utter disregard of his own safety, unhesitatingly jumped to the tracks from the platform on which he was standing, and sped to the assistance of the dazed man in a desperate effort to prevent him from stepping in front of the approaching train. Private Luckie was struck and instantly killed by the speeding train as he was racing across the tracks to the side of the confused man who, having stopped momentarily at a point of safety on seeing the soldier running toward him, thus escaped death. The heroism displayed by Private Luckie in making the supreme sacrifice to save the life of another reflects the greatest credit upon himself and the military service.
