Ted Lawson was one of the 80 airmen who, under the leadership of Jimmy Doolittle, disembarked from the U.S.S. Hornet in the first bombing raid over Tokyo in World War II. He was seriously injured when he bailed out of his bomber over China and had to have his leg amputated. He wrote the book “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo” that detailed the mission and was subsequently used as the basis of the movie by that same title.
