    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Joseph M. Lawrence (ASN: 6713812), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving with Company E, 26th Infantry Regiment, displayed at Lake Champlain, near Plattsburg Barracks, New York, on 5 October 1934. When the boat in which two soldiers were sailing capsized on Lake Champlain resulting in the drowning of one soldier, Private Lawrence observing from the shore that the other soldier was also in grave danger of drowning, removed his clothes plunged into the cold, rough waters of the lake, and succeeded in bringing this soldier to shore, thereby saving his life.
