The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant George E. Brown (NSN: 0-95383), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the U.S.S. SCULPIN (SS-191), during the NINTH War Patrol of that Submarine in the Truk Island area on 19 November 1943. Despite a severe enemy depth charge attack which severely damaged his ship, he remained at his station as Diving Officer and, with great skill, coolness and high devotion to duty, carried out his duties for a period of five hours. After the SCULPIN was forced to surface and her Commanding Officer was killed by destroyer gunfire, Lieutenant Brown succeeded to command of the crippled submarine, gave orders to abandon ship, skillfully carried out scuttling operations and left his ship as it dived beneath the sea. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to all with whom he serves, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
