The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Commander (MC) James Daniel Boone (NSN: 0-62812), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Surgeon on the staff of the United States Naval Hospital Canacao, Philippine Islands. Working tirelessly and without regard to personal safety, he displayed superior professional and administrative skill in the handling of a large number of casualties following the destruction of the Cavite Navy Yard by Japanese aerial bombing, 10 December 1941, the subsequent direction of a field unit, during destruction of the Canacoa-Sangley Point area, and the surgical hospital care of the Navy patients under Japanese control. By his brilliant leadership and steadfast devotion to duty, throughout these hazardous periods, he performed an outstanding service in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Lieutenant Commander Boone is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
