The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Henry G. Keefer (ASN: 6681179), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving with Guard Detachment, Atlantic Branch, U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, on 18 December 1929 at Governors Island, New York, when at the risk of his own life he recaptured single-handed an escaped general prisoner who was armed with a loaded shotgun which he had forcibly taken from a sentry. Private Keefer was not on duty at the time of the escape but ran to the scene obtained from another sentry a shotgun which was later found to have been jammed boarded a tugboat upon which the general prisoner had taken refuge, disarmed him although covered by the prisoner’s gun, and returned him to his place of confinement.
