After he was shot down during World War II, Harry Aldro was interned in the Taipei Prison camp by the Japanese. On May 29, 1945, he was one of 14 airmen sentenced to death during a mock trial, and executed by his captors less than two months before the end of the war.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Radioman Second Class Harry Hershley Aldro (NSN: 3776916), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against enemy forces on 24 October 1944, near the Philippine Islands. During a successful torpedo attack on an enemy battleship, he maintained constant radio communication and materially aided his pilot in pressing home his attack and evading the heavy and accurate anti-aircraft fire. His extraordinary coolness in the action made possible very accurate assessment of the damage inflicted on the enemy force. His courage and skill were at all times inspiring and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
