The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Photographer’s Mate Second Class Clifford Ernest Hollenbeck (NSN: 3906238), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as crewman/navigator of a jet reconnaissance aircraft while attached to and serving with Heavy Photographic Squadron SIXTY-ONE during a reconnaissance mission on the night of 20 April 1967. While on a night road reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam, Petty Officer Hollenbeck, through extraordinary skill and concentration in the operation of special reconnaissance equipment accurately detected a large concentration of enemy trucking. Despite intense enemy anti-aircraft fire and the additional demands of operating DECM equipment, he provided the aircraft commander with target information, thus assuring the success of the mission which resulted in the destruction of a large amount of enemy trucking. Petty Officer Hollenbeck’s professional skill, courage and devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
