The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Captain George K. Hynes (AFSN: FV-3147440), United States Air Force, for meritorious achievement as a member of the 19th Air Commando Squadron, while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in operations against an opposing armed force at Saigon, Republic of Vietnam, on 1 February 1968. On that date, Captain Hynes voluntarily left the safety of Tan Son Nhut Air Base to rescue aircrew members despite intelligence placing three to four divisions of hostile forces within the city. Although the personnel to be rescued were located in billets which were among the key objectives of the hostile forces, Captain Hynes, with unwavering courage, successfully accomplished his mission through the embattled streets of Saigon. The exemplary leadership, personal endeavor, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Hynes in this responsible position reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
