The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Captain George K. Hynes (AFSN: FV-3147440), United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life while serving with the 19th Special Operations Squadron at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, on 18 February 1968. On that date, Captain Hynes repeatedly rushed into the burning Base Chapel, which had received a direct hit during a rocket attack. With complete disregard for his own safety, having already been wounded by the blast, Captain Hynes without hesitation, entered the inferno and helped wounded comrades to safety. Despite the intense heat and danger of a collapsing building, he continued to fight the fire and ordered evacuation. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Captain Hynes reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
