    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal to Captain George K. Hynes (AFSN: FV-3147440), United States Air Force, for meritorious service as Intelligence Officer, 19th Special Operations Squadron, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, while serving with friendly forces engaged in operations against an opposing armed force from 5 September 1967 to 23 August 1968. During this period, Captain Hynes was solely responsible for obtaining more timely and accurate intelligence information with which to brief aircrews flying daily airlift missions. He was instrumental in establishing policies and procedures which enabled aircrews to communicate directly with the ground forces they were supporting. His outstanding performance significantly improved the efficiency of the entire airlift operation. The exemplary leadership, personal endeavor, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Hynes is this responsible position reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Captain George K. Hynes (AFSN: FV-3147440), United States Air Force, for meritorious achievement as a member of the 19th Air Commando Squadron, while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in operations against an opposing armed force at Saigon, Republic of Vietnam, on 1 February 1968. On that date, Captain Hynes voluntarily left the safety of Tan Son Nhut Air Base to rescue aircrew members despite intelligence placing three to four divisions of hostile forces within the city. Although the personnel to be rescued were located in billets which were among the key objectives of the hostile forces, Captain Hynes, with unwavering courage, successfully accomplished his mission through the embattled streets of Saigon. The exemplary leadership, personal endeavor, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Hynes in this responsible position reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain George K. Hynes (AFSN: FV-3147440), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-123K Navigator, 19th Special Operations Squadron, at Kien Hung, Republic of Vietnam, on 16 April 1968. On that date, Captain Hynes was a member of a combat crew tasked to airdrop vitally needed ammunition to the outpost of Kien Hung. Approaching the drop zone, the aircraft was attacked by concealed hostile gun positions which damaged their aircraft. Although the aircraft did receive moderate battle damage, Captain Hynes remained undaunted as he directed the aircraft to a successful airdrop which placed the ammunition in the hands of friendly forces. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Hynes reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Captain George K. Hynes (AFSN: FV-3147440), United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life while serving with the 19th Special Operations Squadron at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, on 18 February 1968. On that date, Captain Hynes repeatedly rushed into the burning Base Chapel, which had received a direct hit during a rocket attack. With complete disregard for his own safety, having already been wounded by the blast, Captain Hynes without hesitation, entered the inferno and helped wounded comrades to safety. Despite the intense heat and danger of a collapsing building, he continued to fight the fire and ordered evacuation. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Captain Hynes reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
