The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Bronze Star Medal to Captain George K. Hynes (AFSN: FV-3147440), United States Air Force, for meritorious service as Intelligence Officer, 19th Special Operations Squadron, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, while serving with friendly forces engaged in operations against an opposing armed force from 5 September 1967 to 23 August 1968. During this period, Captain Hynes was solely responsible for obtaining more timely and accurate intelligence information with which to brief aircrews flying daily airlift missions. He was instrumental in establishing policies and procedures which enabled aircrews to communicate directly with the ground forces they were supporting. His outstanding performance significantly improved the efficiency of the entire airlift operation. The exemplary leadership, personal endeavor, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Hynes is this responsible position reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Hynes (AFSN: FV-3147440), United States Air Force, for meritorious achievement as a member of the 19th Air Commando Squadron, while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in operations against an opposing armed force at Saigon, Republic of Vietnam, on 1 February 1968. On that date, Captain Hynes voluntarily left the safety of Tan Son Nhut Air Base to rescue aircrew members despite intelligence placing three to four divisions of hostile forces within the city. Although the personnel to be rescued were located in billets which were among the key objectives of the hostile forces, Captain Hynes, with unwavering courage, successfully accomplished his mission through the embattled streets of Saigon. The exemplary leadership, personal endeavor, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Hynes in this responsible position reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
