The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private William Hone (ASN: 6851483), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving with Company K, 12th Infantry Regiment, in rescuing a soldier from drowning in the Potomac River, on 5 August 1934. When the Harbor boat General D. H. Rucker was being docked at Fort Washington, MD, a soldier fell from the freight deck of the steamer. Hearing cries for help Private Hone, a passenger, with complete disregard of personal danger jumped overboard and succeeded in reaching the soldier and bringing him to a place of safety.
