Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 116 (August 25, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) William Norman Holm (ASN: 0-23282), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 7 January 1945, at ****, Belgium. Having previously captured the town of **** in a daring attack with sixteen men, Major Holm, then Executive Officer, 551st Parachute Infantry Battalion, assumed command of the battalion during the peak of the assault on ****, when the battalion commander was killed and officer casualties were heavy. Stiff enemy resistance and intense artillery concentrations had reduced the battalion to less than 100 effectives. With utter calmness and complete indifference to the heavy fire, Major Holm reorganized the men who were exhausted from three days of heavy fighting in bitter cold weather. His cool, courageous leadership in the face of overwhelming odds served as an inspiring example to the tired men. He personally directed the attack on the town, effecting its capture along with 250 prisoners after approximately 200 of the enemy had been killed. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Holm, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    Decorations U.S. Army 1862 – 1926, Supplement 4 (July 1, 1939 – June 30, 1940)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Cadet William Norman Holm (ASN: 0-23282), West Point Corps of Cadets, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with Company M, 1st Class U.S. Corps of Cadets, in rescuing a comrade from drowning in the Hudson River at West Point, New York, at about 3:00 p.m., 28 May 1939. On seeing two cadets struggling in the water after their canoe had been capsized in a sudden squall, Cadet Holm and another cadet, with utter disregard of their personal safety, went to their aid in a frail canoe. Fighting their way through the rough waves, high wind, and the driving rain, Cadet Holm and his companion, with great difficulty, succeeded in reaching the two cadets in the water, one of whom was unconscious and being supported by the other who was completely exhausted. When his companion towed the unconscious man to the canoe, Cadet Holm succeeded in pulling the inert body into the boat, and with his companion and the exhausted man clinging to the sides of the frail craft, paddled the canoe to the shore, thereby saving the life of one of the rescued cadets. The heroism displayed by Cadet Holm on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
