The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private John G. Hellen (ASN: 6364082), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving with Company L, 7th Infantry Regiment, at Ryans Point, Columbia River, Vancouver, WA on 8 June 1930. While swimming in the Columbia River an unknown girl was caught in a whirlpool and was drowning. Private Hellen, with utter disregard for his own safety, swam to the girl and succeeded in keeping her afloat until sufficient help arrived. The heroic conduct and disregard of self displayed by Private Hellen reflect great credit upon himself and the Army of which he is a member.
