    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Charles E. Gilnick (ASN: 6878403), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in rescuing a soldier from drowning at Gorgona Beach, Republic of Panama, 19 September 1937. While in swimming, Private Gilnick heard a cry for help and realized that a comrade had submerged in the strong undertow and was in grave danger of drowning. Diving to the bottom, Private Gilnick located him and brought him safely to shore where he administered artificial respiration, thereby saving his life.
