The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Painter Second Class George Ackerman (NSN: 6689465), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 21 June 1945 at Okinawa as gunner aboard the U.S.S. HOLLORAN (DE-305) in action against an attacking enemy plane. Although mortally wounded by strafing he caused his gun to deliver effective gunfire, while under strafing attack, until he died at his gun. His courage and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
