    Decorations U.S. Army 1862 – 1926, Supplement 3 (1940)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Paul D. Eskew (ASN: 6385872), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with Military Police Company, Hawaiian Department, in saving a woman from drowning in the Pacific Ocean at Makapuu Point, Oahu, Territory of Hawaii, at 1:30 p.m., 19 June 1938. On hearing cries for help from a woman who had become panic-stricken and exhausted while swimming in the rough, open sea about 30 yards from shore, Corporal Eskew who was swimming nearby, with utter disregard of his personal safety, immediately swam to her rescue and taking her in tow started toward shore. In spite of the violence of the breakers, the strong undertow, and the encumbering weight of the semiconscious woman, Corporal Eskew was able to bring her to safety, thereby saving her life.
