The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class Lilburn M. Aaron (NSN: 6260045), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while participating in the first aerial flight of carrier based torpedo bombers over the Tokyo area on 17 February 1945. As turret gunner he assisted his pilot greatly by being constantly alert and vigilant. In the face of strong enemy air opposition, intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire and knowing that no escape was possible if forced down he remained calm and aggressive at all times, keeping his pilot informed of the tactical situation. During the destructive attack on a strategic war plant, he vigorously and effectively strafed enemy gun positions thereby contributing greatly to the success of the mission. His courage, skill and devotion to duty were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
