The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant James C. Eldredge (ASN: 6352185), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in rescuing two persons from drowning off Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina, 10 July 1935. Hearing cries for help and seeing that two persons were caught in the strong undertow and were being carried out into deep water, in grave danger of drowning, Sergeant Eldridge, who was in swimming at the time, swam first to the assistance of a young lady and with great difficulty brought her into shallow water where she was assisted to safety. He then returned to the water and after much difficulty succeeded in bringing in a small boy who was also unable to reach shore. As a result of his efforts, Sergeant Eldridge was completely exhausted.
