The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Third Gold Star in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Robert T. Barbor (NSN: 0-145302), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as pilot of a Corsair Night Fighter aircraft attached to and serving with Composite Squadron THREE (VC-3), a component of Carrier Air Group ELEVEN, based aboard the U.S.S. PHILIPPINE SEA (CV-47), during combat operations against hostile North Korean and Chinese Communist Forces while upholding the policies of the United Nations Security council in the vicinity of Kumsong, Korea, on the morning of 26 January 1951. Despite the hazards of darkness and overcast weather, with exceptional skill he led his flight in an instrument descent above treacherous mountain terrain, subsequently locating and attacking the enemy. Pressing home the attack with fragmentation bombs and low level strafing in the face of intense enemy ground fire and extremely poor visibility, the flight destroyed many vehicles of an enemy convoy and inflicted heavy troops casualties. The results of this attack contributed directly and materially to the success of the succeeding day’s operations. Lieutenant Barbor’s daring initiative, and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of heavy odds were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
