Thompson, Jr., United States Navy, was awarded a Second Gold Star in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving with Fighter Squadron SIXTY-THREE (VF-63), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 23 June 1952.
