The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Robert King Awtrey (NSN: 0-283294), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a jet photo aircraft of Composite Squadron SIXTY-ONE (VC-61), Unit FOX, attached to the U.S.S. KEARSARGE (CV-33). On 30 October 1952, Lieutenant Awtrey, flying an unarmed aircraft, on a specially assigned photographic mission deep into enemy territory, obtained photographic coverage of the assigned targets far in excess of that normally expected, and thereby provided vital and timely intelligence to the United States Navy and Naval Service. In order to maintain the element of surprise so necessary to the successful accomplishment of this mission, Lieutenant Awtrey proceeded without fighter escort in the face of known opposition by enemy fighters and anti-aircraft gun installations. His superior skill in the required flight planning, flying ability and outstanding courage in the successful accomplishment of the assigned mission were an inspiration to all officers and men serving with him, and were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
