    Decorations U.S. Army 1862 – 1926, Supplement 4 (July 1, 1939 – June 30, 1940)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Bruce Dixon (ASN: 6968632), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with Headquarters Company, Pacific Sector, Fort Amador Canal Zone, in rescuing a boy from drowning in Matasnillo River, Paitillo Point, Republic of Panama, on 22 February 1940. Seeing a boy about eight years old being swept rapidly to sea by the swift current of a deep river into which he had fallen, Private Dixon, with complete disregard of his personal safety, plunged into the stream and went to his assistance. Reaching the boy as he sank unconscious beneath the waves, Private Dixon dove into the river, dragged the drowning child to the surface and, fighting against the strong current, swam with him to shore where he administered artificial respiration, thereby saving his life. The heroism displayed by Private Dixon on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
