The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant James Ganson Daniels, III, United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot in a Fighting Squadron, when, on 1 February 1942, after participating in a successful bombing and strafing attack, he, despite the extreme limitations of his single-seat plane and in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire, took several photographs of the bombed enemy base. Later, in the afternoon, he intercepted two twin-engined enemy bombers and, with the assistance of his teammate, destroyed one of them and damaged the second.
