The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Walter Danielak (ASN: 6643700), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving with the Coast Artillery, displayed in rescuing Private Rene J. Caron from drowning in New York Harbor on 17 May 1933. Responding to a call for help from Private Caron, who had fallen overboard from Pier A, North River, to which United States Army Mine Planter General E. O. C. Ord was being moored, Private Danielak and another soldier, with complete disregard of personal danger, fearlessly jumped overboard into the cold, treacherous waters of New York Harbor and rescued Private Caron from drowning.
