The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Ensign Lowell Ray Brewer (NSN: 0-507941), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a Jet Fighter Plane in Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED NINETY-ONE (VF-191), embarked in U.S.S. PRINCETON (CV-37), in action against the enemy in Northern Korea. On 2 March 1951, while escorting a Photo Reconnaissance plane on its mission of photographing vital bridges and supply routes, Ensign Brewer made daring low level strafing runs on anti-aircraft positions to silence and divert the fire being directed at the unarmed Photo Plane. During these runs Ensign Brewer’s plane received numerous damaging hits in the wings and wing tip fuel tanks. In spite of this damage to his plane he continued making runs destroying three gun positions and two enemy trucks. With his mission accomplished he escorted the Photo Plane back to his base carrier. By his courage in the face of enemy fire and devotion to duty he upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
