The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class Elwin N. Belt (NSN: 3724306), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Radar Navigator of a Night Attack Bomber, serving with Composite Squadron THREE (VC-3), Detachment D attached to Air Group ELEVEN, in attacks on hostile North Korean forces. During the period of 5 August 1950 through 1 February 1951, he participated in nine day strikes, seven close air support, one weather reconnaissance and two day courier flights over hostile territory. During the hours of darkness he participated in thirteen night intruder missions, two reconnaissance flights and one courier flight. An alert and conscientious crewman, he personally was responsible for sighting many concentrations of troops, vehicles and gun replacements. Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class Belt performed his duties on the assigned missions with skill and courage in spite of adverse weather conditions and frequent intense enemy anti-aircraft fire. His courage, initiative and good judgment in executing these attacks were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
