The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Richard C. Bartlett, Jr. (NSN: 0-173720), United States Navy, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a pilot of a night attack aircraft of Composite Squadron THIRTY-FIVE (VC-35), attached to U.S.S. ANTIETAM (CV-36), on a night heckler mission on 18 December 1951. Lieutenant Bartlett, while encountering intense enemy ground fire, intrepidly and resolutely made repeated attacks on three large trailer-type tank trucks in North Korea, destroying all three trucks, and left five warehouses intensely burning as a result of a direct hit with a 500-pound bomb. These successful attacks materially aided in the interdiction of the enemy supplies to the fighting front. His courage and gallant leadership and devotion to duty, together with complete disregard for his own personal safety, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
