    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Leonard Ellsworth Carey (ASN: 6545421), United States Army, for heroism, not involving actual conflict with an enemy, displayed while serving with Company D, 4th Infantry Regiment, while rescuing Sergeant Robert L. Meador, Service Company, 4th Infantry, from drowning in the Blackfoot River near Sperry Grade, Montana, on 27 June 1935. Private Carey, hearing a call for help, plunged fully clothed, into the swift current of the Blackfoot River and rescued Sergeant Meador, who had fallen into the river and was in grave danger of drowning.
