Smith, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in assisting in the rescue of thirteen survivors of an aircraft which had crashed into the seadrome of the U.S. Naval Station, Sangley Point, Philippine Islands, on 14 June 1951.
