Ploss, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving as the damage control assistant attached to U.S.S. MANCHESTER (CL-83) when a fire broke out in the after fireroom while underway from San Francisco to Pearl Harbor on 3 August 1950.
