Gay, Jr., United States Navy, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. STICKWELL, in the rescue of a sailor from drowning in the Sea of Japan off the coast of Korea, on 5 December 1950.
