The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Roland Courtney Brown, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 6th Engineers, in rescuing an officer from drowning in the Nisqually River, near Camp Murray, Washington, 30 April 1987. While making a reconnaissance for a river crossing, an officer slipped on the rounded stones of the river bottom, lost his footing, and was carried down stream into deep water. Lieutenant Brown, seeing that this officer was in grave danger of drowning, plunged into the swift, treacherous current with absolute disregard for his own safety and succeeded in bringing him safely to shore.
