    Decorations U.S. Army 1862 – 1926, Supplement 2 (1939)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Edward J. Brennan (ASN: 6901521), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in rescuing a soldier from drowning at Neptune Dock, Fort Slocum, New York, on the night of 26 July 1937. When the small ferry “Klondike” tied to the steamer “Colonel Barnett” which in turn was tied to the dock, was about to leave for Fort Slocum, a soldier fell into the water from the end of the dock. Private Brennan, upon hearing the splashing in the water, realized that a man was overboard. With utter disregard of his own safety, in darkness, he jumped into the water and, with great difficulty, brought the soldier to the surface where he was assisted to a place of safety.
