The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Airman Leonard W. Burchfield (NSN: 4846085), United States Navy, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy for a distinguishing act of heroism on 16 May 1957, while attached to the Naval Air Station, Cubi Point, Philippine Islands. Airman Burchfield did, without regard for personal safety, rescue one Buddy C. Rogers NSN: 4678069, Airman, U.S. Navy, from a burning gasoline refueler loaded to capacity with aviation gasoline. By his courageous actions, he materially aided in extinguishing the fire on the burning body of Airman Rogers and thereby suffered first, second and third degree burns on both hands requiring medical treatment.
